Eddie Izzard Makes Charity Trip To Africa

[from looktothestars.org]

Whimsical comedian Eddie Izzard this week began a journey through Africa with UNICEF to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

He has been tweeting and blogging his progress and has been both shocked by the poverty and encouraged by the progress of the country. His tweets have shown both carcasses of parched cattle and the more encouraging sight of locals enjoying a ‘water-truck filling station’.

Whilst on the trip, Eddie will be filming his travels to show people just what life is like.

To see photos of the trip, and for regular updates, check out Eddie on Twitter.

According to UNICEF, almost 85% of urban Kenyans are now using improved drinking water services and 93% of young people (aged 15 to 23) are literate, but there is a long way to go. The infant mortality rate is 55% and 57% of teenage girls believe that a man is justified in beating or abusing his wife under certain circumstances. UNICEF aims to ‘build a world where every child’s rights are met’ and Izzard’s trip will help highlight the need for aid as well as providing a real-life account of what is going on out there; seeing pictures on the news is a whole lot easier to ignore than up-to-the minute accounts and pictures of what life is like for impoverished Africans.

“Cars 2” star Eddie Izzard plans political career

[from reuters canada]

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Since breaking out of Britain’s comedy ranks, Eddie Izzard has carved out a strong career in Hollywood movies and TV. His HBO comedy special, “Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill” earned him two Emmy Awards, and his movie credits include the two “Ocean’s Eleven” sequels.

Izzard, 49, a transvestite, is now voicing a role in animated movie “Cars 2,” which opens in U.S. movie theaters on Friday. He sat down with Reuters to talk about his role in the film and his plans for a new career — in politics.

Q: Sir Axlerod is a former oil baron who puts on a race to show off his new clean-burning fuel. Relate to him much?

A: “My dad worked for an oil company and I do like business. I’m into retail. I like good merchandise and I like good ideas, so that’s what I channeled in to Sir Miles Axlerod. He (represents) all the positive businesses like Google and Apple who try to do something different in a good way. Except he has a slight twist and an interesting aftertaste.”

Q: You had your own series “The Riches” on U.S. cable network FX and this past year appeared on the Showtime series “United States of Tara.” Any plans for more television?

A: “I’m developing a political drama with FX. We’re working toward shooting a pilot. There are hoops you have to jump through before it gets to series but I’m a determined bastard. I’m a transvestite that’s got this far.”

Q: Beyond that — films, TV, stand-up — any other long-term career goals?

A: “Films are my first love. But I’m not going to back off stand-up now. And I’m going into politics in nine years.”

Q: A cross-dressing politician? Gay or straight?

A: “I’m not gay. I’m not even bisexual. I’m a straight transvestite. A wannabe lesbian. I wanted to be (actress) Carrie Ann Moss in ‘The Matrix.’ That was my thing. If I was a woman, I’d want to be an action transvestite, a kind of feisty girl.”

Q: So, what office would lesbian transvestite politician Eddie Izzard run for?

A: “I’ll be mayor of London or MEP (Member of the European Parliament) or MP (Member of Parliament).”

Q: Why politics?

A: “I’m a radical centrist. I think most of the world is around the center of politics and that’s where I want to be. I like people setting up businesses and creating wealth. I distrust the right wing and I don’t like fascists. They keep rearing their heads and we fought a war to get rid of them. It should be about the people, about having a safety net and fighting to have health care for people.”

Q: You’ve performed your stand-up shows in French. Any plans to tackle other languages in foreign countries?

A: “I will do it in German, Russian and Arabic. Languages are a case of hard work and repetition. For Russia, I’ll spend two months learning the language before I start the shows. I’ll be in deep immersion, speaking Russian morning, noon and night, 24-7. It will be a hellish first two weeks but after that, you cannot but get better.”

Q: Why Arabic?

A: “I was born in an Arabic country so I have to go back to my home town — Aden, Yemen — where my parents met, where my brother was born and I was born. I think it’s my duty at this time, with this world, to learn the languages of countries who maybe feel a little bit separate or are having a tough time.”

Q: Do you identify with the Arabic culture?

A: “Yes. A lot. And I want to identify with it more. I want to be in there. I want to get immersed with it. Because I don’t believe in a God. I’m a spiritual atheist. I believe in us. I believe in humans. I believe the God and the devil fight is in everybody’s heart and mind. Heaven and hell are on Earth and we all know people who have lived through it over the years.”

Q: Why is this your belief?

A: “I can’t afford to believe in something that I don’t think is happening. I would love to think God is organizing stuff but how can you take my mother when she was 40 (years old), of cancer, when she never smoked and worked as a nurse — and let Hitler live to 56? People do good works and then they get taken. People do evil works and they live.”

Eddie Izzard Confirms Future Political Career

[from contactmusic.com]

Funnyman Eddie Izzard has vowed to pursue a career in politics by standing as a candidate for the position of London Mayor in 2020.

The comedian is a vocal supporter of Britain’s Labour party and campaigned on former leader Gordon Brown’s behalf in the run-up to the U.K.’s general election last year (10).

He has now confirmed he will put himself forward to run London as a Member of Parliament (MP) or a Member of the European Parliament (Mep) in the 2020 ballot.

Izzard tells Sky News, “I’m standing for either Mayor of London MP or Mep in nine years’ time, in 2020. Can you set your watches?”

Eddie Izzard: Comedian wants Leeds voters to tick box for change

[from yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk]

COMEDY met politics in Leeds when Eddie Izzard dropped in on students and shoppers in the city yesterday.

The cross-dressing comic was in no joking mood when he visited students at Leeds Metropolitan University’s City Campus Library, in Woodhouse.

His appearance also drew the crowds in Briggate, where he expressed his support for the Yes to Fairer Votes campaign, with the help of student musicians from Leeds College of Music.

He said: “I’m delighted to be headed to Leeds. The referendum race is too close to call and voters in Leeds and Yorkshire could make all the difference.”

The stand-up comedian and actor, 49, is a leading voice behind the campaign, which backs people to vote for the alternative vote system.

His visit to Leeds came as part of a whirlwind UK tour to back the change, in which he is travelling around the country in a purple Volkswagen camper van.

Eddie dips his oar in to power ‘Yes’ lobby

[from Cambridge-news.co.uk]

Eddie Izzard breezed into Cambridge to push the boat out for pro-Alternative Vote crusaders.

The comedian and writer, a staunch supporter of the YES! To Fairer Votes campaign, donned rowing gear and joined college crews on the River Cam to help local supporters get their AV message across.

The Cambridge branch of the Yes campaign has used boat racing as a motif in the run-up to tomorrow’s Alternative Vote referendum. The referendum asks voters to say whether they want the existing first-past-the-post system for parliamentary elections to be replaced by AV, which allows people to rank candidates in order of preference.

Stephanie Ferguson, YES! To Fairer Votes Cambridge organiser, said: “First past the post is fine for a boat race, but not an election.”

Mr Izzard arrived at the Trinity Hall boathouse last night to meet campaign supporters and members of boat crews from Clare College and St Edmund’s College.

He posed for the cameras on a riverside rowing machine and then joined the crews on the river, ahead of tomorrow’s referendum.

Alternative Vote is no joke, says comedian Eddie Izzard

[from oxfordmail.co.uk]

COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard rode into Oxford yesterday in an attempt to ignite interest in voting reform.

Tomorrow voters will have their say on whether the UK should replace the first past the post election system with the alternative vote (AV).

“Vote no” campaigners are adamant people should back the status quo.

And many advocates of change fear the nation has switched off from the issue altogether.

But Mr Izzard took to the streets to enthusiastically urge people to vote yes to AV.

As previously reported in the Oxford Mail, analysis of the last year’s General Election, carried out by academics at Essex University, showed the Liberal Democrats would have won both Oxford seats if AV had been used.

Mr Izzard, who was paraded through the city on the back of a cycle rickshaw, said AV was a fairer system and, contrary to some opinion, was not complicated.

Eddie Izzard at Yes to AV campaign launch

[from london-se1.co.uk]

Eddie Izzard has joined Yes to Fairer Votes key workers at Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre for the campaign’s national launch.

“I am delighted to be hosting the launch of the Yes to Fairer Votes campaign,” said the entertainer. “This is the only time we have been asked to change the way we do politics in this country and I think we should seize the moment.

A referendum on changing the voting system from first past the post to the alternative vote will take place on Thursday 5 May.

“I don’t want to wake up after the referendum and find out it’s just business as usual at Westminster,” declared Eddie Izzard.

[from contactmusic.com]

EDDIE IZZARD, DAVID WALLIAMS and SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH have been honoured by the British Scout Association for their inspirational charity work.

The trio was among 15 heroes who received special Scout badges as the traditional boys’ organisation celebrated its 103rd birthday.

The two funnymen have raised money for Britain’s Sport Relief and Comic Relief charities by taking on gruelling challenges recently; Izzard ran 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometres) across the U.K. in 51 days last summer (09) and in May (10), Walliams completed a 1,000-mile (1,609-kilometre) charity bike ride.

Other recipients of the special badge included comic James Corden and pop band Scouting For Girls.
