SYNOPSIS:
‘Believe’ chronicles comedian Eddie Izzard’s rise to fame from his early influences – losing his mother to cancer at a young age before being sent with his brother to boarding school to his close present day relationship with his supportive father. At school, when he saw what getting into the Cambridge Footlights Revue could do for your career his goal became to follow Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson and try for a place at the University. When that didn’t work out he headed to the Edinburgh Festival, equipped with nothing but a unicycle and some banter, eventually figuring out how to draw a crowd. He’s been working hard at it ever since.

‘Believe’ is the mantra of Eddie Izzard: if you want to be a singer, you’ve got to believe you can sing, if you want to be a comedian you’ve got to believe you can be funny. Eddie believes in Eddie and it was this rock solid self-belief that allowed him to perform onstage as a transvestite when it was considered career suicide. When his highly successful West End show, Dressed To Kill won critical acclaim he had only himself to thank for booking the theatre.

Director Sarah Townsend skillfully combines home video, stills and archival footage in this intimate and edgy portrait of the performer.

Eddie Joins Hope Not Hate Campaign Anti-Racism Party

The Mirror’s Hope Not Hate anti-racism campaign rolled into in Brighton yesterday.

Eddie Izzard and ministers Ed Balls and Glenys Kinnock were among the crowd that turned out to urge campaigners to fight the BNP at the general election.

Nick Lowles, of anti-racism group Searchlight, said: “Nick Griffin may have made it into the European Parliament, but Hope Not Hate is growing. We are determined there will be no seats won by racists.”

Speaking at the event Eddie Izzard told the audience how inspired he had been by many of the people he had met on the Hope Not Hate campaign.

The comedian and actor added: “I was lucky enough to meet a Holocaust survivor and a veteran from the First World War, among many other inspiring individuals involved in this campaign.”

And Ed Balls apologised for the local election success of the far right in Britain.

He said: “I have to apologise for the BNP getting in in Yorkshire.

I promise you we’re going to redouble our efforts to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

The Mirror’s campaign bus has now made three annual trips across the UK celebrating modern, diverse Britain.

Marathon man Eddie Izzard hints at plans to stand as MP

[from the Guardian.co.uk]

Eddie Izzard celebrated completing 43 marathons in 52 days by predicting today that he would run for parliament in Westminster or Brussels within the next 15 years.

Having closed out his 1,100-mile, seven-week slog for charity in London yesterday, the 47-year-old talked of his future plans as he went to Downing Street to meet Gordon and Sarah Brown and David Miliband, the foreign secretary.

The self-styled “action transvestite”, who was raising money for Sports Relief, put his success down to his “relentlessness”, saying “I’ve said I will stand as an MP or MEP at some stage, in 10 to 15 years. I like to make long announcements. But at the moment, I’ve spent so long trying to get my career going [that] I don’t want to throw it away.”

“I feel really good. My legs hurt, my body hurts, I’m very tired. I lost my toenails, had blisters and stuff, but to finish – it’s kind of like science fiction in a way,” said Izzard, who starts a 44-date tour next month in his more familiar role as a standup comic.

He said he wouldn’t stop running. “I do have to wind down but I want to keep a couple of long runs going a week. I don’t want to throw it all away.”

Izzard has already raised more than £200,000 after completing a programme that sometimes involved running distances of 31 miles a day. He trained for just five weeks beforehand and attributed his success to a victory of mind over matter.

“My analogy was world war two. They all did amazing things that they were not planning to do. They became commandos and they shot anti-aircraft batteries, and if you imagine in your head you are going to do this extreme thing then you do it.”
