Eddie in Eric Idle's new play

"What About Dick?"
A Film for Radio with music by John Du Prez
Featuring an all star cast of: Billy Connolly, Tim Curry, Eric Idle, Eddie Izzard, Jane Leeves, Emily Mortimer, Tony Palermo, Jim Piddock, John Du Prez, and Tracy Ullman

(thanks Betsy for the review)

OK, so first of all, it killed. Still sore from laughing, but with that cast, how could you not? Unfortunately I can't tell you much about the show itself, as it was very confusing. Something about a cursed piano (voiced by Eric Idle... yes, I said "voiced") and vibrators. Beyond that, I was utterly lost. I seriously hope that Eric Idle isn't planning to use the audience reaction as an accurate gauge for the quality of the piece, because frankly, that cast could've been reading a fucking phone book and would've gotten the same adoration. And, though I love the man dearly, I have to say Eddie was not at his best. He struggled to do a mediocre Indian accent with one character, and did an Italian character that sounded more Russian than anything. But, as I said, nobody much cared. Tim Curry was absolutely stellar (natch), as were Billy Connolly and Jim Piddock. Tracey Ullman very much overshadowed the other two actresses, Jane Leeves and Emily Mortimer, but all performances were solid. All in all, a very entertaining evening, even if I couldn't follow the plot. And tomorrow Eddie's doing a matinee, then heading over to the Coronet to do a gig. When does he have time to take a pee??????

ONE WORD IMPROV
(with special guest Minnie Driver)

(thanks Brandi!) "I'm trying to remember as much as I can of the the improv show, but it was a whirlwind of skits. Plus, we stopped at the little pub beforehand and had a drink called 17 Days in a Crack House...

So what I remember was the audience shouting words like 'construction', 'danger' (which caused Eddie to jump up and start miming playing the banjo, so it became Danger Song with the whole crew jamming along), some medical terms (a condition of having too much cartlidge...?), 'traveling' which had Eddie and Minnie Driver trying to take a car trip but the car had no steering wheel, and they get pulled over in their driveway (they did the husband & wife bickering thing a bit, and quite well too, must be the influence of the new cable show...?).

There was a skit that had one of the other guys, and the young girl cooking in the wilderness when another guy as an old man comes up to tell its bad luck to cook a rabbit on a Tuesday in October... the skit had to do with 'superstition' at first but then became the go-to skit for other random words like 'cow patty' which was voiced by Minnie. I think she was slipping into making it an Irish cow patty (paddy?) but randomness ensued from the others.

My fav skit was from the word "bougeoisie" and had one guy as an arrogant, American hating French exchange student and another as the boy of his host family at Xmas time. Had me tearing up from laughter, and I looked over and saw Eddie was bent over in his chair and red faced from laughing. A few times in the show Minnie had to turn from the audience cuz she was giggling, and I think I even saw her wipe a tear away. Minnie's and Eddie's accents would change a lot in the skits and not necessarily because of what was going on in the skit, but Minnie stopped him once and said, "...and why are we suddenly American?".

In one skit she was a mermaid/siren, and Eddie as Jesus was swimming out to her. She asked why Jesus couldn't walk across the water to her, and he said something like that miracle was played out, and that he had floaties on his ankles but was too top heavy and fell over, but he had other miracles like pick a card and put it back in the deck...

The skit from the word 'mercy' had my fav line of the night though. Eddie was on his knees praying and another guy kneels down next to him to pray, leans in to him and says, "So, uh, what are YOU praying for?" Then God and Satan jump in and plan a get together.

My word contribution for the night was 'sasquatch' which became a skit about some sort of mythical/fairy tale character rehabilitation. One guy was Jack & the Beanstalk, I think there was Frankenstein, Minnie was Cinderella and before Eddie could say a character name, Minnie called him Tiny Tim. lol.

There were occasional words like 'crotch' and 'penis', and even 'Bush' (which I'm guessing meant Pres. Bush) shouted out but were ignored by the cast. lol Crap, I wish I could remember more, but so much of it is hard to even describe. It was kinda like an audience full of people with Tourettes watching 6 people with severe ADD. I loved it. I wanted to join in so badly."

EDDIE ROCKS LIVE EARTH

Eddie Izzard presented the next act, Razorlight, telling the audience: "A lot of us are going to come out and are going to tell you to do things. A lot of stuff we tell you we have to do as well. "We`re probably more guilty than anyone with all this flying around and stuff. "With two billion people watching, today is the day to start."

A MAGICAL LOVE-IN

"...Eddie Izzard was also a festival favourite with his one-off performance. "Just For Laughs executive Bruce Hills called Eddie Izzard's show, his first appearance at the fest in a decade "a love-in, probably the most magical show I’ve seen in years”. Izzard also appeared on The Greg Proops Chat Show a talk show pilot that Variety said ‘generated considerable industry interest.’..."

Update: FAN REVIEW (updated 07.26.05)

STEADY EDDIE

Brit comedian Eddie Izzard broke out at Aspen in 1998 - with spiked, dyed hair, mascara and nail polish. He billed himself as a "cross-dressing surrealist comedian." But he was a different man at the Wheeler Opera House on Thursday night. Izzard was dressed like a preppy, and his routine was definitely mainstream, even family-friendly. I counted only two f-bombs in the entire set. He talked about Aspen as a town and a fragrance. He promised to go out and buy bottles of Aspen cologne, "and if I don't get any action, I'll be jolly enraged." He complained about the thin air, the empty front-row seats, the early lack of laughter. He joked about sharks and bees and wasps. But by the time he finished his one-hour set, Izzard had the crowd screaming and laughing. So why the cleaned-up act? People think he's hoping for a TV deal and that he wants to show the folks in Aspen that he can be funny without being out there.

UPDATE: "Eddie Izzard, who opted to forgo his drag queen attire in the 30-degree Rockies, seemed to ad-lib his way through the first half of his Thursday night show before picking things up with his imitation of life in a beehive. The act required much prancing around onstage, causing a wheezing Izzard to remark on how thin the air is in Aspen." (variety.com)
